"Paris Noir" at the Centre Pompidou traces the presence and influence of Black artists in France from the 1940s to the 2000s. The exhibition highlights 150 African and Afro-descendant artists, from Africa to the Americas, whose works have often never been shown in France.
The show is reminiscent of “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism” held at the MET last year, where they mined HBCU collections for work that painted a much truer and inclusive representation of Harlem, unlike their 1969 exhibition “Harlem on My Mind”.
Among the featured artists are Lou Mallou Jones, who first came to Paris on a fellowship, Chéri Samba, one of the most renowned contemporary African artists from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sam Middleton and James Baldwin’s close friend Beauford Delaney, as well as the Cuban Wifredo Lam.
As was the case when the Met got a reboot with the Harlem Renaissance exhibition, Paris is seeking to set the record straight while fostering inclusivity in the arts.
Voila! get there before it closes on June 30th, after which the Pompidou will be closing for a $262M restoration.
